Synopsis

A dazzling triumph from the bestselling author of The Virgin Suicidesthe astonishing tale of a gene that passes down through three generations of a Greek-American family and flowers in the body of a teenage girl.

In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls' school in Grosse Pointe, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry blond clasmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between themalong with Callie's failure to developleads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

The explanation for this shocking state of affairs takes us out of suburbia- back before the Detroit race riots of 1967, before the rise of the Motor City and Prohibition, to 1922, when the Turks sacked Smyrna and Callie's grandparents fled for their lives. Back to a tiny village in Asia Minor where two lovers, and one rare genetic mutation, set in motion the metamorphosis that will turn Callie into a being both mythical and perfectly real: a hermaphrodite.

Spanning eight decadesand one unusually awkward adolescence- Jeffrey Eugenides's long-awaited second novel is a grand, utterly original fable of crossed bloodlines, the intricacies of gender, and the deep, untidy promptings of desire. It marks the fulfillment of a huge talent, named one of America's best young novelists by both Granta and The New Yorker.

This is a great book, in a weird sort of way. It is one of the books I recommend to people as a 'must read.

First let me start by saying i love Jeffreys writing style, its poetic and informative a bit too informative for my taste. I liked the idea of the story and as i started reading got entranced in the details of it it all. but as i got deeper into the book i was yearning to hear Cals story. I literally lost interest as we got to Middlesex Ave. I could tell you all about all the characters aaaand all the details of the house. anyway needless to say i wanted to love this and 5 star this but i didnt get what i was looking for until the last 100 pages or so. All in all i think this book could have been made short and concise cutting off most of the runon details. What would usually take me 1 or 2 weeks to read took me 2 months as i was so bored. :

Delves very deep into the characters of which there are so many. Wouldn't be surprised to learn that it was a true story passed off as fiction to protect privacy of subjects involved.

Very well written, intersting to follow the generations and the sins of the fathers rippling through future generations. Well crafted story.

Captivating and educational. An interesting look at the world throught the eyes of such a confused little girl.
