Synopsis

Daniel Emerson is a successful and celebrated New York lawyer, but when he fails to keep a drug lord out of jail, he finds that his life is in danger. He moves with his girlfriend and her little daughter to the Hudson River town of Leyden, where he grew up, and starts a small practice there. Then he meets a young married woman named Iris, falls in love with her, and sees his newly placid life take a few more troublesome turns. A New York Times Notable Book for 2003.
