Synopsis

In this ingenious twist on the murder mystery, the main characters in the three interconnected plotlines in Karen Shepard's DON'T I KNOW YOU? do not try to discover the murderer in their midst. Instead, they go to great lengths to ignore the motives and clues that would indicate a loved one is culpable of a crime. When Gina Engel is raped and stabbed to death, her son ignores the fact that the killer could very well be his mother's jealous boyfriend, the boy's former teacher and legal guardian. A year later, a Chinese-American teacher discovers that her rich fianc' had a violent and passionate history with Ms. Engel, but she is reluctant to undermine her new life. Finally, a decade after Gina's death, an elderly neighbor, dying of cancer, has reason to believe her mentally handicapped son could be responsible for the murder, but he is also her only companion, and she does not want to turn him in. Shepard's devilish novel incriminates all the characters, because all of them, through their willful ignorance, and moral selfishness, have allowed themselves to become accomplices to murder.
