Synopsis

The desperate living conditions of and the prejudice against Edinburgh's immigrant population provide the theme for the 15th Rebus mystery. A few years ago, Donald Cruikshank was convicted of raping 19-year-old Tracy Jardine, who committed suicide a few weeks after the verdict. Now Tracy's younger sister Ishbel is missing, and a recently paroled Cruikshank has been murdered. While Detective Sergeant Clarke tries to investigate these related issues, her superior, Detective Inspector John Rebus, is trying to discover who killed a Kurdish journalist seeking political asylum. The two detectives' apparently separate cases intersect at yet another mystery--two skeletons found underneath a pub floor--and take them into a dark underworld of illegal immigrant-trafficking.
