Rent From the Earth to the Moon

Synopsis

After the American Civil War the Baltimore Gun club, a society dedicated to the manufacturing of all sorts of weapons, especially canons, is challenged by their president to construct a canon capable of sending a manned projectile to the Moon. President Barbicane's challenge is mocked by one of his enemies, Captain Nicholl, who proceeds to wager against different phases of the project. The canon must be constructed over a large site. A location outside of Tampa is selected and the massive canon is constructed in the nick of time. Along the way a French poet joins the enterprise and convinces the two antagonists that he should join them in the manned capsule. The experiment is successful in getting the projectile into space but what happens next is anyone's guess.
