Synopsis

These six stories are about Americans living in Central Asian countries like Afghanistan and Kazakhstan, where Tom Bissell has traveled extensively. (He wrote about his own experiences there in CHASING THE SEA.) Among these tales are 'The Ambassador's Son,' a bad-boy story about a young man who gets his comeuppance and 'Expensive Trips Nowhere,' in which a married couple tests their relationship (and finds it wanting). In the title story, which won a Pushcart Prize, a missionary in Uzbekistan struggles to resolve the competing claims of God and lust.
