Synopsis

In writing a hard-boiled book that was also a dystopian novel--and by the way could you make it clear that this wasn't a fully realized critique that I had in hand before I started writing, it was something that dawned on me later--I was only exaggerating a tendency that was already present in the hard-boiled novel, which is that the protagonist, the detective, is always a man out of time. He's always the standard-bearer of some old, chivalrous moral code that has been forgotten or overwhelmed by a dystopian future.
