Synopsis

A doctor for the Roman Empire in occupied Britain, Gaius Petrius Ruso faces a wide array of problems in the backwater frontier: foul living conditions, a lousy boss, financial problems, a divorce, an ungrateful slave-girl, and the mystery of the murdered prostitutes at the bordello. As he becomes an unwilling detective, his own life becomes endangered. Ruth Downie marvelously portrays the chaotic existence at the fringes of the Roman Empire, and Gaius is a compelling protagonist--a civilized man in an uncivilized world.
