Synopsis

Arriving home after a fundraising dinner at a D.C. hotel, Illinois senior senator Lyle Simmons finds his wife brutally murdered on the foyer floor. Detective Charles Chang is determined to find out why.

Among other suspects, the detective casts a cold eye on the K Street lobbyists with whom Simmons is famously close. The investigation takes Chang deep into the tangled and largely private world of lobbyists and puts him face to face with the kind of scandalous behavior much in the news these days. But the question at hand is whether there are lobbyists willing to do much worse than lie and steal - lobbyists so compelled by their cause as to be driven to murder - and Chang has no reason to think he'll find a happy answer.
