Anyone who enjoys space operahould like Old Man's War with its well plotted twist on the idea of humans fighting other races for space in the Galaxy. What makes this especially interesting is that the novel is apparently meant as a tribute to the late Robert A Heinlein of Star Troppers fame. This is both a plus and a minus. heinlein was a first rate writer, after all, but he does come from another generation. And it the fist part of the book, Scalzi's imitation is so slavish that it gives the novel a strangely old-fashioned feel--this despite the insertion of a few naughty words probably designed to giveit a 21st century feel. Then about half way through Scalzi finds his own voice, one influenced by Heinlein, but very much John Scalzi. It was at this point that the book springs to life and truly grabs the reader. I heartily recomend this novel by a new writer in an old genre.
