Synopsis

In the mid-19th century, Lady Eleanor arrives in Calcutta with her brother Henry, who is the new Governor-General there, and her younger sister Harriet. The novel takes the form of Eleanor's diary, which tells the story in both its personal and political aspects. This encompasses the secret incestuous affair between Eleanor and Henry, Harriet's liaison with her Indian servant, his mysterious murder, Henry's gross miscalculation that ends in thousands of deaths, and the family's resulting return to England, where the two sisters--older and wiser--find their lives are singularly less interesting. And the disgraced Henry continues to thrive. The story is based on actual diaries of the period. A New York Times Notable Book for 2003.
