Collins (1824-89) was an English novelist, playwright and short story writer best known for his 1859 novel 'The Woman in White and 'The Moonstone' (1868) which is considered the first English detective novel. He became a close friend of Charles Dickens with some of his stories first appearing in Dickens's journals 'All the Year Round' and 'Household Words, ' and the two collborated on works of drama and fiction. This travel book was first published in 1851 before he had established himself as a novelist and is reprinted from an edition of 1861
