Synopsis

Wealthy playboy Luke Taggert wants to keep a woman without the commitment of marriage, and he's got his sights set on Cassie Zerek. So he plots to make Cassie his live-in mistress by jailing her father, then offering to help save Cassie and her brother from certain destitution by hiring Cassie to live at his homestead. But Cassie's naive virtue keeps her from understanding the role that Luke would assign to her. Once Cassie does understand, Luke has fallen in love with her and wants to make her his wife, but Cassie isn't interested in such a deceitful man.

In a nutshell: Sweet girl is so sheltered by her protective father that she has NO CLUE about the realities of the world. When world-weary Luke the richest man in town connives in a completely dastardly way to make her is live in companion she completely misinterprets his intentions and thinks he wants someone to keep him company and play chess with him! Frustrated at first, then befuddled, and then finally smitten, the tables are turned on Luke and his slimy ways. The story is in essence your typical tortured hero saved by the love of a good woman plot, but there are a lot of refreshing twists, as well as a good dose of humor. Maybe things got a little too angsty before getting to the inevitable happy ending, but I DON'T CARE! I loved it anyway. I'll be buying this book and getting more by this author.
