Synopsis

This prizewinning novel--the first of Andrea Levy's to be published in the US--about Jamaicans in England takes place in the 1940s. Gilbert, a veteran of the RAF, and Hortense, a teacher, get married and move to London so he can go to law school and she can find a good teaching job. But once there, they encounter prejudice and frustration. Their story is intertwined with that of Queenie, their white landlady, and her husband Bernard--whose casual racism is part of what fuels the plot.
