No species has ever reached for the stars without the guidance of a patron--except perhaps mankind. Did some mysterious race begin the uplift of humanity aeons ago? Circling the sun, under the caverns of Mercury, Expedition Sundiver prepares for the most momentous voyage in history--a journey into the boiling inferno of the sun.
Okay, maybe I'm stupid, or maybe I just don't have the patience anymore. I *really* tried but the writing was just too dense, and reading it felt like I was busting my butt in return for a miniscule reward. This isn't the first of David Brin's novels I've tried to read. I saw him at a World Con once he was a very nice man. But the only novel of his I managed to get through was The Postman, possibly because I'd seen the movie which I liked, BTW. Unless you're really into hard and I mean HARD sci-fi, don't go near this book. I can't recommend it. Reading shouldn't be this much work!
