Synopsis

The monumental Hugo and Nebula award winning SF classic-- To feature a new introduction by John Scalzi

The Earth's leaders have drawn a line in the interstellar sand--despite the fact that the fierce alien enemy they would oppose is inscrutable, unconquerable, and very far away.  A reluctant conscript drafted into an elite Military unit, Private William Mandella has been propelled through space and time to fight in the distant thousand-year conflict; to perform his duties and do whatever it takes to survive the ordeal and return home.  But 'home' may be even more terrifying than battle, because, thanks to the time dilation caused by space travel, Mandella is aging months while the Earth he left behind is aging centuries...

BookLender review by Christine on 2009-06-30 15:07:27

I'd have to agree with the second review here. I appreciated the book for what it was trying to achieve in it's time, but I couldn't get over how silly it was that in the book, the government ends up psychologically conditioning every human being to be homosexual for 'population control' purposes. I mean really, BC doesn't exist in a future with collapsars and stasis fields?! And then at the end, they offer to turn them all straight so they can live a 'normal life' on another planet, and even though some of the soldiers are disgusted by the idea they agree to it!. The author's complete ignorance of homosexuality was probably acceptable when the book was released, but now it just harms the overall quality of the work.
