Synopsis

After his mother dies--taking with her her memories of the lost estate, Staplefield, where she grew up--Gerard Freeman begins to wonder about some family mysteries. He also begins to get serious about meeting his maddeningly elusive longtime penpal, a young woman with the Jamesian name of Alice Jessel. Then he finds a series of hallucinatory ghost stories written by his grandmother many years ago, and begins to discover the truth about an event in his mother's life that changed his family forever--and now will work its changes on Gerard as well. John Harwood weaves together several plot lines and time periods to create a gripping, eerie, and very literate psychological horror tale.
