Subtitled \"Being a Glimpse at the Relation of the Mind with the Organisation of the Body\", this work was first published in 1848. In his preface the anonymous author explains that in compiling his own book he has drawn on two recently published European studies into the structure and conformation of the human hand, namely D\'Arpentigny\'s \"La Chirognomonie; ou, l\'Art de Reconnaître les Tendances de l\'Intelligence, d\'après les Formes de la Main\" (Paris, 1843), and \"Ueber Grund und Bedentung der verschiedenen Formen der Hand in verschiedenen Personen\" by Professor Carus (Stuttgart, 1846). Where the theories and statements of these two experts were not in accordance with his own experience, the author has chosen to omit or modify them, and he includes much original material related to his own findings. The book includes four full-page illustrations of different types of hand.
