Synopsis

On the island of Killakeet off the coast of the Carolinas in the midst of World War II, young Josh--son of the lighthouse keeper there--is now head of the Coast Guard station, rescuing boats menaced offshore by the German U-boats that patrol the area. At the same time, the captain of one of those boats, Krebs, is ordering torpedo attacks on merchant ships. The fortunes of these two men--opposite numbers who may be linked by a bizarre coincidence--intersect when a passenger on the U-boat makes his way to shore.
