Ursula K. Le Guin's award-winning, groundbreaking science fiction classic takes us to the world of Winter, and introduces us to its inhabitants, the Gethenians-whose society is not based on gender roles.
Aside from using male pronouns to describe genderless people (which I think sort of interferes with the book's theme of examining the concept of gender roles), I really enjoyed this book. It's a very unique and thought provoking look into an alien culture.
here is another book i read for a book club. this one is science fiction, and very good! it was written a while ago, so i wasnt expecting much, but i'd definitely read books by her again. this is about a man who is put down on another planet, years in the future, and his mission is to learn about the customs of the people (much like an anthropologist) and try to get them to join the big confederation of planets that exists. these people had never thought of the fact that there might be other inhabited planets, they dont even have airplanes. and, they don't have men and women. they turn into either a man or woman of sorts when they mate, which they're able to do once a month, but otherwise theyre androgynous. just the way i've always wished people were!! read this book!
