Synopsis

The idea of superheroes as insecure and neurotic appeared most powerfully in the 1980s with Alan Moore's WATCHMEN. Since then, it has become something of a trope, appearing in films (MYSTERY MEN) and books (FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE) for both comedic and artistic effect. Charles Yu's debut collection of short stories mines a similar vein, with stories balancing between the supernatural and the utterly mundane. Not all the stories are superhuman in nature--'My Last Days As Me' follows a TV actor, suffering from the replacement of his onscreen mother--but they all humorously expose the struggles of normal people living in a larger-than-life reality.
