Synopsis

At last a book has finally been written about the African and Caribbean communities in Walsall. This remarkable book is the result of genuine collaborative efforts of a number of Walsall and Black Country participants. Not only does this book recapture the stories of a group of Caribbean migrants who came to live and work in the town in the 1950s and 1960s, but the research was carried out by the Walsall Local Black History Group, with the printing and publishing completed by local businesses, thus ensuring that this book can be described as a truly Walsall product. Notwithstanding this, however, the book is for everyone, especially readers particularly interested in contemporary local British history and also the community relations. What this book successfully manages to do, is to carefully record and document the powerful and personal experiences of African Caribbean people who came to settle in Walsall in the 1950s and 1960s. In many instances, the writers have, through their use of actual quotations from the people interviewed, allowed their voices to be heard. Despite the 'Sweat, tears and eventual triumphs,' these pioneering individuals survived and contributed greatly to the Walsall community.
