John Gregory Dunne's page-turner of a thriller, set in the 1940s, juxtaposes the two high-achieveing Spellacy brothers: Tom, a lieutenant in the LA Police Department and Desmond, a monsignor and the chancellor of the LA diocese. When Tom starts investigating the murder of a Hollywood starlet (a reprise of the notorious Black Dahlia case), he finds out a couple of things he wishes he didn't know, including the possibility that his pious brother is just a little bit corrupt. Dunne's storytelling here is esteemed equally with his evocation of a time and a place. The novel was made into a Robert DeNiro-Robert Duvall movie in 1981, with a screenplay written by Dunne and his wife, Joan Didion.
