Synopsis

A quiet barn filled with animals no one else wants and a troubled young boy with dyslexia converge in this unusual, candid, and wonderfully written middle-grade novel that is also a 2006 Newbery Honor Book. Though Bernie, a tender old man, owns the barn, the true leader is the Lady, a black duck who rules over the socialist chickens, two placid horses, a bunch of nasty rats, and Whittington, a tough gray tabby who is a masterly storyteller. Bernie’s grandchildren, Abby and Ben, begin attending Whittington’s story hour, and soon the animals decide to help Ben with his reading. As the seasons pass, new animals join the group, and Ben learns to read while Whittington spins a fascinating medieval tale that holds everyone spellbound. Accompanied by B&W line drawings.
