Romantic suspense is a tough genre in popular fiction. Most aithors have a hard time trying to balance a good suspense tale with realistic characters and relationships and most fall short. I feel Diana Palmer's book was very strong on suspense with a gripping mystery surrounding Native American artifacts but it falls far short in the romance department. I think part of the problem were the female characters were portrayed as silly, delusional, jealous stereotypes. Phoebe particularly irritated me with her unrealistic view of her relatioship with Cortez. His cousin wasn't too much better, leaping to conclusions that weren't there. If that was supposed to create dramatic tension, I would have preferred Palmer not go that route in her plot and stuck to the good story with the mystery. The book did not inspire me to read any mroe by her.
