Synopsis

In New York Times bestselling author Alex Kava's new thriller, Special Agent Maggie O'Dell investigates the death of three teenagers, only to find herself in the middle of a conspiracy involving biological warfare.

On a crisp fall evening in western Nebraska, what started as a group of kids filming their drug-fueled party ends in an explosive light show, leaving the victims apparently electrocuted, with odd scorch marks being the only evidence. While Maggie tries to make sense of the different stories, sifting through what is real and what is hallucination, she realizes that the surviving teens are being targeted and systematically eliminated.

Meanwhile on the East Coast, Maggie's FBI partner, R.J. Tully, and Army colonel Benjamin Platt are at the scene of a deadly outbreak, desperate to identify the pathogen that has infected children at a Virginia elementary school. Despite the miles that separate them, the two cases collide as Maggie, Tully, and Platt uncover secrets that were meant to stay hidden in the remote Midwest landscape.

Alex Kava is an excellent and highly underrated writer of mystery and suspense. Her stories are creative and her heroine Maggie ODell is as realistic a character as Patricia Cornwells Kay Scarpetta. HOTWIRE is another excellent book in the series featuring Ms ODel and Col Benjamin Platt. They were working on two separate investigations that ended up being related in an interesting way. I liked the book and it satisfied my need for a good mystery after a summer of Regency romance and Amish stories. To me the difference between Scarpetta and ODell is that I never feel uplifted or satisfied after reading one of Cornwells books but with Kava, even though everything seems bleak and sad there is a little ray of hope with a more positive outcome for Maggie. If you havent read any of Kavas books you should try the series. I think Maggie ODell is an interesting character and the stories will keep you enthralled and guessing til the end. Her books are also fairly easy reads but that doesnt take away from the quality of the novels because she doesnt get bogged down in a lot of details that I think sometimes literary mystery writers do and give us TMI. :
