During the Crusades, Wilifrid, a young Saxon knight, embarks on a series of adventures to prove himself worthy of the princess Rowena, fighting the Normans and the Templars—and allied with such figures as Robin Hood and Richard the Lionheart.
BooksFree has two audiobook versions of Ivanhoe. The other audiobook is read by Frederick Davidson in an effete, aristocratic style better suited to reading Oscar Wilde than a story of Twelfth Century knights. But this version is read by Michael Page - and what a difference! Page does it just right and never overdoes it. The men growl, the women are honest and demure, the Norman rulers are unctuous, and the Saxon men are, well, real men. Michael Page makes Sir Walter's occasionally dense verbiage easy to understand and follow. Great stuff.
