Synopsis

Jack Rathbone is a painter of astonishing gifts, and his sister Gin is troubled when Jack takes up with another painter, a woman named Vera Savage, and leaves London with her for New York. As the years go by, Jack and Vera settle in the tropical town of Port Mungo, Gin--the novel's narrator--ends up in Greenwich Village, and a mysterious death leads them all along dark paths that meander through the worlds of art and passion and their strange family history.
